02How to hand-wash a baseball cap, step by step
Fill a basin with lukewarm water. Never hot — add a small amount of mild detergent or washing-up liquid.
Spot-treat the sweatband first. Dab a little detergent onto the band and any marks, then work it in gently with a soft brush or an old toothbrush.
Submerge and soak. If the peak is plastic, let the cap soak for 10–15 minutes.
Agitate gently. Lightly brush the sweatband and grubby areas. Don’t scrub hard, and don’t wring it.

The dishwasher hack: it does the rounds online, but we don’t recommend it. The hot water and heated drying cycle can warp the peak and fade colours — the risk simply isn’t worth it.
The washing machine: a sturdy 100% cotton cap with a plastic peak can survive a cold, delicate cycle if you protect it — pop it inside a pillowcase or a cap cage, use a gentle liquid detergent, cold water, and skip the spin if you can. Even so, hand-washing is gentler and lower-risk, so it stays our default.
Never use hot water, a tumble dryer or chlorine bleach on a coloured cap. Heat and harsh bleach are what turn a good hat into a misshapen, faded one.
04Drying & reshaping (the part that matters most)
Drying is where most caps get ruined, so take your time. Never tumble dry — heat shrinks and warps caps.
Reshape the damp cap by hand, then air-dry it over a rounded object that matches your head size: a small jar, a folded towel, a tin or a dedicated cap form all work well. This keeps the crown domed and the peak nicely curved. Dry at room temperature, away from radiators and out of strong direct sun, which can fade a wet cap unevenly.
